Did you know that one million plastic bottles are purchased every minute, while up to five trillion plastic bags are used worldwide every year? Half of all plastics produced are designed for single use — tossed away after one-time consumption, according to the UN Development Programme.

In Malaysia, we consume 148,000 tonnes of plastics for food packaging alone. Putting this number into perspective, we have a relatively alarming record among ASEAN countries, with the highest annual per capita plastic use recorded at 16.78kg per person even before the COVID-19 pandemic. In fact, the saying ‘our planet is choking on plastic’ is no exaggeration, albeit terrifying. The book Kita Boleh: Hentikan Pencemaran Plastik is written with earnestness by author and illustrator Tan Yi Sin to raise awareness about reducing plastic usage in our country. Incorporating cute, bright, colourful, and detailed illustrations, Yi Sin hopes that the data highlighted in the book serves as a wake-up call for not just children but also adults to play their part in curbing the plastic pollution crisis.

Each of us can make a difference to our country, and together we can change the world, as the old adage goes,

“A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” — Lao Tzu

About the author:

TAN YISIN

Tan Yisin is an artist with a childlike heart that sees the world through children’s eyes. She believes in the importance of drawing from the heart and is always more than happy to share her drawings with others, hoping to bring a smile to their faces and make the world a happier place to live in.

Many years ago, she started her drawing career by drawing illustrations for merchandise such as gift wrapping papers, bottles, notebooks, etc. When her cute and warm illustrations began to capture the publishers’ attention, she received invitations to draw a few picture books, and the number of her works accumulated over the years. Some of her widely known books include “Little Turtle Messenger” and “The Best Gift”.

Following the publishing of “Little Turtle Messenger”, Yisin created and assembled mosaic pieces along the Turtle Alley at Kampung Cina, Kuala Terengganu, which contributed to one of the many wonderful tourist hotspots in her beloved homeland, Terengganu.

Above all, Yisin is a warm, friendly, and down-to-earth artist. One of the things she likes to do is share her mini handmade picture books and ideas at art and cultural bazaars. If you are a patron of local art and cultural bazaars, you might be lucky to bump into this lovely lady one day.
