This is probably the first picture book we've made so far where the artist has used oil pastels and acrylics, which are difficult to control on small size illustrations. She meticulously painted the scenery, characters, and objects, then cut them out one by one for photographing and arranging—a truly dedicated effort. Since the artist is from Sarawak and has always found the Iban motif art to be beautiful, she then tried incorporating these elements in the picture book.
The writer's story is filled with childlike innocence, beginning with a curious grain named Iggi exploring the journey of Hari Gawai. With a mix of nervousness and anticipation, Iggi witnesses the preparations for the celebration.
During our early editorial discussions, since the artist loves butterflies and draws them well, we suggested that the Rajah Brooke’s birdwing butterfly should be included to accompany Iggi on this exciting adventure. Therefore, instead of the commonly featured hornbill in local picture books, this story features the beautiful butterfly, making Iggi's journey even more vibrant and colorful.
We hope you would enjoy reading this beautiful story!
